Growth Response and Ornamental Value of Saintpaulia and Hypoestes Under the Different Light Conditions

Abstract
Saintpaulia ionantha and Hypoestes sanguinolenta were grown and experimented under the greenhouse conditions of either full sunlight, half sunlight and shade, and the following observations were made;
Saintpaulia and Hypoestes showed either typical solarization, chlorosis on leaves (frequently yellow streakings on Saintpaula) or backward-leaf curling in relatively strong light, and lessened their ornamental value, even if had the greatest dry weight in the strong light.
Saintpaulia had the longest petiole with the weakest light, whereas Hypoestes had the longest with the moderate light (half sunlight), indicating that there is difference in light adaptability and requirement as species or variety varied.
The greatest number of lateral shoots and leaf-variegation spots were produced with the full sunlight, and pigmentation of the spots became likewise.
Discussion was made as to how these light responses of the plants were brought about. It was thus shown that these two plants produce the best results of both growth response and ornamental value when were lighted with half sunlight, rather than eitherfull sunlight or shade.
